17 core reflections over a decade in the entertainment industry
I wrote this 3 years ago. Most is good, some has evolved. An excellent starting pin.
Reflections as a creative director in my mid thirties (in short form) ~
who you surround yourself with dictates your experience. everything is about relationship
artists look to define themselves from a young age, but there should be room for many iterations. it’s a process of absorbing and simultaneously shedding, getting back to yourself, to your authentic core. it takes time. also, society evolves, and the industry evolves, and we will mirror this evolution. don’t get stubborn and egoistical and left behind
authenticity becomes magnetic, synchronized with the world around you. aligned and clear-headed, intentional. amplify this sparkly energy. you don’t attract what you want, you attract what you are. embody, embody, embody
I am the center of my universe. we all are, we are just orbiting each other
I’ve never subscribed to gender roles — I don’t feel gender, age. it’s about soul, energy what’s coming out of their mouth and the maturity of the relationship and work produced. don’t know if this is nature or nurture for me. there is a necessity for masculine/feminine energy balance in work relationship, regardless
never had longterm goals because as artists we consistently evolve and change. it’s more about being present with what’s in front of me in the moment, am I enjoying it, what am I learning, how am I evolving into what I am meant to do next, how am I expanding my present
for new work — I simply look for ways to reinvent myself internally and it mirrors externally. how can I learn? how can I expand?
life in entertainment is a balance of self awareness and not taking things personally. auditions/job interviews: treat it like dating. It has to have mutual attraction, spark
be the thermostat, not the thermometer (set the temp vs taking it). as any type of leader, the trickle down effect is very real
spend time listening. clear the noise. clear a quiet home for your intention and intuition. this home is sacred. protect it at all costs. know your way home
knowing your audience is key. take time to learn the language of your listener. that’s all life is. conflict most often arises from miscommunication, not feeling heard
flow don’t force - 90% of the time
time is subjective. slow down, or just decide
health comes first. you, come first. how can you relate as an artist when you don’t know who you are or what you need?
no one cares that much so fail, fail away
I think to be a good leader you inherently have to love people (this is serious)
life can be a series of disappointments or a series of lessons, it’s up to you
